چکیده

Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent the majority of the AGN population. However, due to the difficulties in measuring their black hole (BH) masses, it is still unknown whether they follow the same BH mass-host galaxy scaling relations valid for quiescent galaxies and type 1 AGN. Here we present the locus of type 2 AGN having virial BH mass estimates in the MBH − σ⋆ plane. Our analysis shows that the BH masses of type 2 AGN are ∼ 0.9 dex smaller than type 1 AGN at σ⋆ ∼ 185 km s−1, regardless of the (early/late) AGN host galaxy morphology. Equivalently, type 2 AGN host galaxies have stellar velocity dispersions ∼ 0.2 dex higher than type 1 AGN hosts at MBH ∼ 107 M⊙.

Detection of Faint BLR Components in the Starburst/Seyfert Galaxy NGC 6221 and Measure of the Central BH Mass

In the last decade, using single epoch virial based techniques in the optical band, it has been possible to measure the central black hole mass on large type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples. However, these measurements use the width of the broad line region (BLR) as a proxy of the virial velocities and are therefore difficult to be carried out on those obscured (type 2) or low luminosity...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Observational Effects of Strong Gravity in Vicinity of Supermassive Black Holes

Here we discuss the effects of strong gravity that can be observed in electromagnetic spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). According to the unification model of an AGN, there is a supermassive black hole (10 − 109M⊙) in its center, surrounded by an accretion disk that radiates in the X-ray band. Accretion disks could have different forms, dimensions, and emission, depending on the type of c...

New virial black-hole mass estimates are presented for a sample of 72 AGN covering three decades in optical luminosity. Using a model in which the AGN broad-line region (BLR) has a flattened geometry, we investigate the M bh − L bulge relation for a combined 90-object sample, consisting of the AGN plus a sample of 18 nearby inactive elliptical galaxies with dynamical black-hole mass measurement...
